Activated Carbon Foam

Activated carbon filters with a technical nonwoven fabric or foam base

Activated carbon filters are among the most effective solutions for purifying air and gases. They are used in numerous applications—from industrial exhaust air purification to air conditioning and ventilation systems. Activated carbon filters based on nonwoven fabric or foam carriers have proven particularly effective. These offer an optimal combination of high filtration performance, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness.

How Activated Carbon Filters Work
Activated carbon has a highly porous structure with an enormous internal surface area.

Pollutants, odors and unwanted gases are bound to the surface of the activated carbon through adsorption. This allows even the smallest molecules to be effectively removed from the air.

Nonwoven Fabric as a Carrier Material
Nonwoven-based activated carbon filters are characterized by their low weight and high adaptability. The nonwoven fabric serves as a carrier material in which the activated carbon is evenly embedded. This design enables:

  • high air permeability combined with efficient filtration
  • flexible applications, even with complex geometries
  • easy processing and custom cutting

Nonwoven filters are frequently used in applications where large volumes of air must be purified with low pressure drops. (Example: range hood filters)
  • Foam as a Carrier Material
  • Foam-based activated carbon filters offer a stable yet open structure. The activated carbon is embedded in the pores of the foam, ensuring uniform distribution. The advantages of this design are:
  • high mechanical stability
  • good reusability in certain applications
  • effective filtration combined with a robust design

These filters are particularly suitable for applications where, in addition to filtration, a certain degree of structural strength is required.
